The process of heating domestic hot water by solar thermal system is very simple:
panels, called collectors, installed on the roof absorb the heat from the sun
the water/ glycol in the panels heat up
this hot water/ glycol solution is pumped through a coil in the cylinder were it heats the domestic hot water in the cylinder
Solar thermal panels are compatible with most existing water systems. However, a new hot water cylinder with two coils is needed.
The benefits of solar water heating
hot water throughout the year
reduced energy bills
receive payments for the heat you generate from a solar thermal system through the government's Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)
lower carbon footprint
Costs & Savings
The cost of installing a typical domestic solar thermal system is £3,000 - £5,000. Savings are moderate – the system can provide most of your hot water in the summer, but much less during colder weather. During the winter months it is needed to heat the water further with a boiler or immersion element. Savings will vary from user to user and will depend on such factors as:
how much hot water your household uses
How much interest you take in how the system works and adapt to make the most of the free hot water
the size of the hot water cylinder
how you program your back up heating
